Kibaale District commemorates World Wetlands day with an increase in degradation

Written by on 05/02/2022

As Uganda joins the rest of the World to celebrate World Wetlands day Kibaale District has registered an increase in degradation of wetlands

World Wetlands day was celebrated on Wednesday under the theme ‘‘Wetlands action for people and nature’’

According to the District Natural Resources Officer Animate Kashemire, the degradation rate of wetlands in Kibaale district stands at 30% as of last year 2021.

She says 7% of the total land area across the district is covered by both seasonal and permanent wetlands.

Kashemire attributes the degradation rate of wetlands to activities of cultivation, overharvesting of materials, clay and sand extraction, deforestation among others.

Kashemire adds that the most affected sub countries are Nyamarwa, Kabasekende and Kyebando noting that the district has taken a number of interventions like sensitizing the public about the significances of wetlands, wetland laws and regulations as well as evicting wetland encroachers.

Speaking to some farmers note that conservation of wetlands is vital asking responsible officers at the district level to conduct sensitization meetings at village levels.
